In a new weekly installment, we will be scanning the news sources to find the most interesting news items for contractors and summarize what it means to them.  For our Februrary 3, 2010 edition here are the recent stories that have caught our attention:

U.S. business confidence has improved far more than consumer confidence
Reed Construction Data is reporting that the Business sector's confidence is up and is doing much better than consumer confidence.  The Business sector's confidence along with potential needs in capital investment in the manufacturing sector are good things for the Construction industry.

New Expansion Index Indicates Increased Commercial Construction Volume Expected in 2010
Reed Construction Data is reporting the Commercial Construction should rise 2010 based on their proprietary analytics.  They utilize actual construction projects (either in planning or construction) to make their model and adjust it monthly.  Is your area going up or down, check it out here?

Study: Only 44% in Colorado region committed to their jobs
The Denver Business Journal is reporting that less than 1/2 of workers are committed to their jobs or employers.  The study shows that this is a national issue.  As a service based industry with lots of employees that make the company who it is, this is a critical issue for the Construction Industry.

Building Star Energy-Efficiency Incentives Could Create 300,000 New Jobs
NECA and their partners are trying to get political steam around a program modeled after the "cash for clunkers" program, except for buildings.  The legislation that they are hopefull will be placed in the upcoming "Jobs Bill" will provide incentives for things like building envelope insulation; mechanical insulation; windows, window films, and doors; low-slope roofing; HVAC equipment, water heaters, and boilers; duct testing and sealing; variable speed motors; interior and exterior lighting; building energy audits, commissioning, tune-ups, and training; and energy management and monitoring systems.  The hope is that this legislation could create 300,000 jobs in the construction industry.

New Construction Starts in December Climb 5%; Annual Total for 2009 Drops 26% to $412 Billion
McGraw-Hill Construction reported their year end numbers that showed a total 2009 drop of 26%; however, a pick-up from November to December of 5%.  The growth in December was mostly in the non-building construction sector and the entire year was helped by Non-Building construction.  For the entire year residential and nonresidential were down 31% adn 33%, while nonbuilding was down only 9%.  This was most likely the affect of the Stimulus package which during 2009 was heavily weighted on "shovel ready" road and bridge projects.  If we were to take out those expenditures, the industry in 2009 would look much worse.

Construction Monkey Product Explore Company
Construction Monkey was formed to fill a need in the Construction Industry that has been forming for several years. The industry has become more dominated by General Contractors that self perform very little if any work and thus there are more subcontractors providing the real "construction" services on any given project. These subcontractors are burdened with the risk, performance, safety, quality, and management of the projects being built, while they are in a more competitive market space due to the nearly 800,000 specialty subcontractors in the US alone. The Monkey is here to help subcontractors perform at top levels in this difficult environment. Overview
