Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

The Intiman Theatre will survive. After raising $1 million in pledges, the board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to go forward with a 2012 season. “There were champagne corks popping,” said Terry Jones, president of the board, just after the group's meeting ended Monday evening (Feb. 6). Board members had agreed that if they didn't raise enough to meet the $1 million goal, they would close the doors of the theater permanently. The theater has struggled to come back after abruptly shutting down early in its 2011 season...

Capitol Business: GOP serious about blocking regulations (even one of their own)

Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

Colorado House Republicans vowed to help businesses create jobs by cutting regulation this legislative session. And on Monday, they proved their commitment to that tenet by killing a professional licensing bill that was brought by one of the members of their own caucus. The House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee voted 7-5 against House Bill 1060, which would have created a voluntary licensing program for dietitians. The vote, which was largely along party lines, came as proponents and opponents gave differing views on what the measure would mean for jobs...

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Monday that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was the third most generous donor in America last year, and the most generous one still alive. This is Allen’s 10th year on the list. Only two donors have made the list more times: software billionaire Larry Ellison, and Eli and Edythe L. Broad, whose background is in finance and real estate. Last year, Allen committed $372.6 million to a variety of foundations, including $295 million to his own Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which supports the arts, culture, education and social service programs...

Measure to require oil and gas drilling setbacks dies

Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

A bill requiring oil and gas wells to be drilled at least 1,000 feet from nearby schools or homes in Colorado died Monday when the state House Judiciary Committee voted 8-3 to postpone indefinitely further hearings on it. But the three-hour hearing on House Bill 1176, sponsored by Rep. Su Ryden, D-Aurora, offered the first glimpse of the broad outlines of the Legislature’s 2012 fight over oil and gas operations in Colorado, and how the state’s new Niobrara oil boom has stirred concerns along the populous Front Range...

Microsoft ranks No. 4 on a list of the top stocks owned by members of Congress, according to a report by The Center for Responsive Politics. Stock ownership by members of Congress has been an issue recently after several media reports that were critical of what some viewed as politicians capitalizing on inside information about the financial crisis, including a featured report on CBS news program "60 Minutes." On Thursday the U.S. Senate approved a bill that prohibits legislators and their family members, as well as staffers, from trading stocks if they have non-public information...

Could Hawaii ever hope to host the Super Bowl?

Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

Sunday’s Super Bowl in Indianapolis was filled with dramatic plays in a hotly contested game that went down to the wire. It paled in comparison to the Pro Bowl played at Aloha Stadium the week before. With the all-star game in limbo, could Honolulu actually host a Super Bowl? If it came down to the one requirement mentioned by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in an interview on NBC Sports Network, the Gathering Place is officially in the running. In his one-on-one interview with Bob Costas, the comish said he’d consider a city that had at least 25,000 hotel rooms...

Rumors swirl as NFL considers Pro Bowl's future in Hawaii

Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

The rumor mill is really going regarding Hawaii’s only professional football game — the NFL Pro Bowl. The Associated Press reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is talking about sacking the game altogether following the Jan. 29 score fest at Aloha Stadium, which the American Football Conference all-star players won over the National Football Conference by a score of 59-41. “We are going to either have to improve the quality of what we are doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even consider eliminating the game if that is the kind of quality of game we are going to provide,” the AP quoted Goodell as saying...

Bank of America investors win class-action status in suit over Merrill Lynch deal

Source: National Business News - Local Business News | bizjournals Publication Date: 2/6/2012

Bank of America got more bad news Monday when a federal judge approved class-action status for a lawsuit accusing the bank and some of its senior executives and directors of fraudulently misleading them about the 2008 takeover of Merrill Lynch. The shareholder suit takes issue with the size of Merrill Lynch’s losses and bonus payments made at the time. U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel rejected BofA’s arguments that the case should not be granted class-action status. Class-action status increases the likelihood of a substantial award if shareholders win their case...

The assurance was contained in a “Letter of No Prejudice” from the FTA delivered to the City and County, according to a statement from Hawaii’s congressional delegation.
