The Intiman Theatre will survive. After raising $1 million in pledges, the board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to go forward with a 2012 season.
“There were champagne corks popping,” said Terry Jones, president of the board, just after the group's meeting ended Monday evening (Feb. 6).
Board members had agreed that if they didn't raise enough to meet the $1 million goal, they would close the doors of the theater permanently.
The theater has struggled to come back after abruptly shutting down early in its 2011 season...

Colorado House Republicans vowed to help businesses create jobs by cutting regulation this legislative session. And on Monday, they proved their commitment to that tenet by killing a professional licensing bill that was brought by one of the members of their own caucus.
The House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee voted 7-5 against House Bill 1060, which would have created a voluntary licensing program for dietitians. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Monday that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was the third most generous donor in America last year, and the most generous one still alive.
This is Allen’s 10th year on the list. Only two donors have made the list more times: software billionaire Larry Ellison, and Eli and Edythe L. Broad, whose background is in finance and real estate.
Last year, Allen committed $372.6 million to a variety of foundations, including $295 million to his own Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which supports the arts, culture, education and social service programs...

The rumor mill is really going regarding Hawaii’s only professional football game — the NFL Pro Bowl.
The Associated Press reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is talking about sacking the game altogether following the Jan. 29 score fest at Aloha Stadium, which the American Football Conference all-star players won over the National Football Conference by a score of 59-41.
“We are going to either have to improve the quality of what we are doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even consider eliminating the game if that is the kind of quality of game we are going to provide,” the AP quoted Goodell as saying...

Hoku Corp. said Monday that the maturity date of $50 million in loans from a Chinese investor has been extended for one year until the first quarter of 2013.
Honolulu-based Hoku (Nasdaq: HOKU) said the $20 million and $30 million two-year loans provided by Tianwei New Energy Holdings Co., Ltd. through China Construction Bank in early 2010 were scheduled to mature this quarter. China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange, which approved the extensions, also preauthorized Tianwei and China Construction to extend the maturity date another year to the first quarter of 2014...

Bank of America investors win class-action status in suit over Merrill Lynch deal

Bank of America got more bad news Monday when a federal judge approved class-action status for a lawsuit accusing the bank and some of its senior executives and directors of fraudulently misleading them about the 2008 takeover of Merrill Lynch.
The shareholder suit takes issue with the size of Merrill Lynch’s losses and bonus payments made at the time.
U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel rejected BofA’s arguments that the case should not be granted class-action status.

FTA: Honolulu may spend $185M on rail project

Honolulu received assurance Monday from the Federal Transit Administration that it may spend $184.7 million to start heavy construction for its $5.1 billion rail transit project ahead of final approval for an anticipated $1.55 billion in federal funding.
The assurance was contained in a “Letter of No Prejudice” from the FTA delivered to the City and County, according to a statement from Hawaii’s congressional delegation.
